The MotoGP world is buzzing with a potential move that could shake up the testing scene. Aprilia, a renowned name in the sport, has expressed interest in bringing Miguel Oliveira on board as a test rider for their MotoGP team. However, there's a catch - they need the green light from BMW, Oliveira's new employer.
Oliveira, a talented rider, found himself without a Pramac MotoGP seat for the upcoming season. But he quickly secured a new challenge, joining BMW's World Superbike Championship team alongside fellow MotoGP veteran Danilo Petrucci. Despite being offered a test role with Aprilia to develop their RS-GP, Oliveira's competitive spirit led him to choose the WSBK path.
Here's where it gets intriguing. Aprilia, based in Noale, Italy, still has their eyes on Oliveira for 2026. They're keen to sign him if BMW allows a dual role, combining his racing commitments with testing duties. With Aprilia facing a shortage of test riders this season due to injuries and absences, they see Oliveira as a valuable asset.
Massimo Rivola, Aprilia Racing's CEO, acknowledged the need for more riders, stating, "If these are the statistics, maybe we need some more." He added, "Sava [Lorenzo Savadori] did some tests, but he was racing most of the time." Rivola left the door open for Oliveira, saying, "If there is a chance, we will take a chance." But he emphasized the need for BMW's approval first.
The potential for Oliveira to represent two rival brands has sparked curiosity. Rivola commented, "Since he signed with BMW, we need to ask BMW first. From our side, we would be happy, we will see."
Oliveira, for his part, has shown interest in combining his WSBK racing with a MotoGP test role. He already has experience with Aprilia, having raced for their satellite team in the past. When informed of Rivola's openness to hiring him, Oliveira reiterated his interest, stating, "For me, it's an option." He acknowledged the challenge of balancing racing and testing schedules, understanding Aprilia's desire to maximize his testing contributions.
And this is the part most people miss. Oliveira had a chance to join Honda back in 2023 when Marc Marquez left unexpectedly. Honda offered him a one-year deal, but Oliveira, already committed to Trackhouse, chose to stay put. Luca Marini eventually took that opportunity and has since benefited from Honda's improved performance. Oliveira, however, has no regrets, stating, "It was not in my character to break a deal just to switch a spot." He valued his existing commitments and the relationships built.
So, will we see Oliveira donning an Aprilia test rider suit? It's a question that only time and BMW's decision can answer. The MotoGP community eagerly awaits the outcome, as this potential move could shape the future of testing and development in the sport.
