Dit tweede deel van Coppola's epische portret van de duistere zijde van de Amerikaanse Droom is een van de zeer zeldzame voorbeelden van een vervolg dat minstens even sterk is als het origineel. Coppola splitste het verhaal op in twee verhaallijnen. In de ene zien we hoe Michael (Pacino) - de nieuwe Godfather - steeds cynischer, ongevoeliger, en gewelddadiger wordt. In een parallelle montage volgen we Michaels vader Vito (ijzingwekkend gespeeld door De Niro), die aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw probeert zijn van Sicilië naar Amerika geëmigreerde familie te onderhouden.
